Sun Eclipse
FN, Sch May 20 To Be in Brazil
By DAVID DIETZ Scripps-Howard Beieuce Elditer The most complete and carefully astronomical test of ‘the Einstein theory of ‘relativity ever made, will be carried out at the eclipse of the sun on May 20.
The observations will be made near Boycayuva, Brazil, by the National Geographical society— army air forces expeditioni. Prof. George Van Bier~ broeck, famous astronomer of the Yerkes ‘observatory of the University of Chi : cre cago, will be in Mi, Diets chargé of the sec. tion of the Sepedioien dealing with the Einstein test,
One of the consequences predietéd by the theory is that the weight of an object increases with its speed, Test Interests Einstein
At the high speeds with which subatomic particles move in vario atom-smashing devices, crease is very great.
If the designers did not take this increase into consideration, the devices would fail to function.
Another possibility predicted by Einstein 1n 1905 on the basis of his relativity theory, was the conversion of matter into energy. This, of course, has been amply demonstrated by the atomic bomb. Astronomers, however, will approve the test planned for May 20
this in-
‘and one may be certain that Prof.
Albert Einstein himself will be one of the persons most interested in the result. Prediction Verified
Einstein had said that space in the neighborhood of matter is curved and that light rays passing through such space are bent. This meant that the light from stars, passing near a massive object like our own sun, would be bent a sufficient amount to be detectable. When the sun is eclipsed, the moon hides the sun, the ky grows dark and the stars become visible. professor Einstein had predicted that the images of stars near the eclipsed sun would be found displaced from their ordinary positions. Two expeditions sent out in 1919 by the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society, one to Sobral, Brazil, and the other to Principe, an island off the west coast of Africa, verified this prediction. Subsequent expeditions h a ve always found the displacement but either to a greater or lesser extent than the exact amount predicted by professor Einstein,
