Golden Bears didn't believe back in December that Garfleld was an eight-point better team, even though this was the verdict when they met in a rather flery session at Shelbyville. So they hoped for another chance to prove it, and. it came at the most dramatic of times—the state finals. It came after the unbeaten Purple Eagles. had vanquished Marion by a 598-50 margin for their 31st consecutive triumph and were bidding to become the only team in Indiana high school basketball history to go through the season and tourney unbeatén. It came after the underdog Golden Bears had overpowered a fheavily favored East Chicago Washington team to gain that final tilt, 54-46.

Coach Frank Baines gave his tossers a sound strategy for the title game, and they followed instructions. Barnes knew he couldn't match the Purple Eagles in height so it would be necessary for his Golden Bears to out-shoot them, pop away at every good opportunity and try to open up, the Garfield defense around the basket.
