ous public health problem, gradually it is being brought La control. : » » » HOOKWORMS survive in the intestine by attaching themselves to the lining membrane of the bowel. They pass their eggs in the discharges, and other persons become infected when they come in contact with the larvae which hatch in warm moist soils. Hookworm infection -is suspected when rural area children of school age in the sandy coastal regions of the southern states develop skin irritation (ground itch) on their feet. The irritated places in the skin are the spots through which the larvae penetrated after contact of the feet with infected ground. nr = n A FEW.worms do not cause any symptoms. Chief complaint inthe average case is anemia, which results fromthe worms extracting blood from their victim: ~Good nufrition is an important element !in combating the infection. In one group of hookworm pa- { tients, the harmful effects were | temporarily overcome by feeding the patients extra quantities of

up to par. Sanitary control of the discharges of patients and the treatment of infected persons are the keys to the elimination of hookworm infection. A drug called hexylresorcinol followed by a saline purge will rid most patients of worms except those who are heavily infected. ® - = OVER 85 per cent are rendered parasite free with one treatment; the others require several treatments. Installation of sanitary toilets will eliminate the possibility of the larvae getting into the skin of barefoot children. Hookworm patients also need good food and iron. Infected persons are spreaders of worm eggs as long as they harbor e _ parasites. Some apparently develop immunity to the disease so that it no longer bothers them, and they become carriers.
