is a mellow tune by Peggy Lee and Hubbie-Guitarist Dave Barbour. The flip is their arrangement—and some arrangement — of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” Look for some more by this pair now that Mr. Barbour is home from the hospital after a serious operation—Benny Goodman offers two new discs: “It Takes Time” and “Moon Faced, Starry Eyed,” both sung by his new vocalist John Mercer. (Not to be confused with Capitol President’ John Mercer.) The second release is “Lonely Moments” and “Whistlér's Blues,” both with superb clarinet solos.
VICTOR-The Spivak trumpet lends mellow background as Tommy Mercer sings “Why Did It Have To End So"Soon?” The flip is “You Can Take My Word For It, Baby,” sung by Rusty Nichols and the Stardreamers.
On the very corny side but fun is “There's a Big Rock in the Road” by the Ginger Snaps—Freddy Martin waxes two tunes from the New York hit, “Street Scenes.” “Moon Faced and Starry-Eyed,” and "What

Tune of Late '20's Is Being Waxed, : Played, Sung and Hummed Everywhere

Victor offers a nice library piece in “Priml Melodies,” an album of eight familiar Friml favorites waxed by Al' Goodman. Tunes include “Song of the Vagabonds,” “Only A Rose,” “Indian Love Call,” and Donkey Serenade.” Leslie Scott, former singer with Louis Armstrong, sings “Stars Fell On Alabama” and Baby, Get Lost,” with the Billy Moore orchestra. That insinuating bass in “Get Lost” is all-star Chub Jackson. Herbie Fields throws in a terrific soprano sax and clarinet phrasing in “Misirlou,” and typical Pields vocals on “Baby Made A Change In Me.” COLUMBIA-—The more I play it the more I like the tune “Rogue River Valley,” by the Charioteers. The semi-folks song has a haunting tune. It sounds as if the boys tried
Six Albums, a Mixture of Old and New, Provide Excellent Evening's Entertainment
‘Gayne’ Ballet Suite Is an Intriguing
Work by Young American Composer
An interesting mixture of the old and the new in classical and semiclassical music is found in the group of recently-released albums chosen for review today. The most sensational composition since “‘Bolero” is among them, in the “Gayne” ballet suite. Appropriate to the season is the “Russian Easter Overture” by Rimsky-Korsakov. work “El Amor Brujo” by De Falla completes a trio of albums which,
when bracketed with three-others by the old masters Beethoven, Mozart and Strauss, form an evening’s turn-table program that is replete with variety, surprise and sheer musical pleasure. KHACHATURIAN: GA YNE BALLET SUITE, played by the Philharmonic-Symphony orchestra of New York, conducted by Efrem Kurtz. (Columbia, M-664, three 13inch records.) This is’ quite an exciting, breath-

Flip is the stepped up novelty “Lox and Bagel.” Charioteers also are excellent on “You Can't See the Sun.” "A nice re-release pairs Frankie Carle’s “Sunrise Serenade” and “Carle Boogie.” Two more hits from the Broadway show “Finian’s Rainbow,” are making disc fans sit up an take notice. They're “Old, Devil Moon” and “Same Old Blues,” by Geéne Krupa. Columbia has a fresh arrangement of Woody Herman's “Woodchoppers Ball,” featuring Woody's clarinet, “Flip” Phillips “bouncing “tenor sax and Bill Harris on trombone. Back is a “Flip” Phillips original “With Someone New.” Paula Kelley and the Modernairres team up on “Hoodle Addle” and “It's Lovin’ Time.” There's plenty of James trumpet and Willie Smith alto sax on “Keb1.ah,” by the Harry James Group. The other side is, by contrast, a soft instrumental, “You'll Never Know.” Last but far from least in the new releases is Claude Thornhill's pairing of “Snowfall,” the orchestra's

RICHARD STRAUSS: DEATH AND TRANSFIGURATION (op. 24), played, by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy conducting. (Columbia, M-813, three 13inch records.) This is the mighty symphonic poem “Tod un Verklarung” which tells the story of a dying man, weary with struggling, who sees his life unrolled before him. Following the final stroke of the percussion which indicates that death has come, there is a triumphal song of deliverance and transfiguration—truly beautiful and inspiring music. His genius is shown by the fact that Strauss composed this great
