Good Production Of Anemic Play
__The Cast Milgred (Bcotile) Fauvre
By HENRY BUTLER Even Tallulah Bankhead couldn't transfuse “Foolish Notion” out of dramatic pernicious anemia. It's not surprising that the Civic
theater's production of Philip Barry's comedy, which opened last night, should be a credit more to the Civic than to Mr. Barry. To say that “Foolish Notion” is over-written is to put the case {mildly. There "are far too many white corpuscles of sophisticated patter, elegant imagination, too few red corpuscles of medium-average= normal human behavior, Not to seem clinical, that's a serious situation.
So the Story Goes When Sophie Wing, actress of the .Cornell-Fontanne-Hayes-Bank-head, et al, eminence, is persuaded
to marry her leading man, Gordon Roark. But Jim Hapgood, the husband, returns (otherwise no play). Five subsequent scenes show the ending as imagined hy Gordon; by Prof. Horatio Wing, Sophie's father; by Happy, Sophie’s adopted caughter, and by Sophie herself, with a final, factual wind-up. All of which seems like ‘a good idea—something different. But as the play goes on and the talk goes on, you lose contact with reality. Mr. Barry has always sought to make his characters seem important by puffirig a cloud of sophistication, reminiscence and sadly cynical culture about them. The Proper Amount Just enough, not too much (too much would be neither Main Line nor Westchester) literary and musical knowledge casually introduced. Just enough spicy, down-to-earth, man-to-man talk—enough for the Stork Club, not for Joe's Bar and Grill. To use a big word, Mr. Berry's work has been a dramaturgic tightrope act.
imaginable, past: or present, would | have a tough job with “Foolish! Notion.” That ‘the Civic players! carry it off so well is a triumph for them and for Director Jack Hatfield.
Does Nicely as Sophie
Mildred (Scottie) Fauvre has, of course, the most exacting role as Sophie. Taking a part like that is like being a martyr to science. It's written for a big-time actress N (clever Mr. Barry), and even La Bankhead couldn't sustain the verbose play. Mrs. Bankheadstrong now and then does admirably. Peggy Pollock,

sing-song intonation. I still think that Mr. Barry's Happy is a monistrous creature rather. than. an amiable child, but maybe I have a ‘Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” fixation. Cheer Smith, as Florence Denny, and E. Edward Green, as Jim Hapgood, both did excellently with difficult roles. “Foolish Notion" will continue at the Civic through next Thursday with a special Butler university alumni benefit performance scheduled for next Friday.
