First Spell-Downs To Be Held March 24
By ART WRIGHT Today is the day grammar school pupils have been waiting for—it's the day to fille your entry for the annual Times Spelling Bee. There are no charges or fees of any kind. The contest is free. And if you become the Indianapolis champion you will get a free trip to Washington, D. C,, and compete in the national spelling bee. There are many valuable prizes and medals to be awarded the champlon and runnersup. There is ‘only one restriction: Entrants must not have passed beyond the eighth grade and must not become 16 years old before June 1, The first spell-downs will be held March 24 at three centers. Contests at other centers will be held on successive nights through Friday of ‘that week. County Contests Entrants who survive the first preliminary will return to their centers the week of April 7 to try for the district title. There will be a winner and runnerup for each center. They Will compete.in. the. semis finals April 18. Look at the official schedile today, find the number or name of your school and report to the center designated for your school on the night listed. In the meantime, be sure to mail or bring the official entry form to Spelling Bee Director, Indianapolis Times, 214 W. Maryland st., Indianapolis 9. County school pupils should not send in entries. Contests for them will be held within the county schools at which time they will qualify for the township finals to determine the township champion and runnerup to compete in the|g semi-finals in Indianapolis.
