Of Amendment

B. P. W. Leads Fight For Equal Rights

~ WASHINGTON, March 11 (U. P.). ~The have taken up arms again in behalf of a constitutional amendment granting them equal rights, and: they figure the Repub-lican-controlléd 80th congress is the |- place to get.a foothold, Rallying around the legislative activities of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women, they are counting on support from both house and senate for an amendment which proclaims that “no person shall be deprived of equal protection under the law by reason of sex.” ; Certain congressional gentlemen are ready, willing and eager to come to the aid of the. women. Oddly enough, .their major opposition

congress, Rep. Helen Gahagan

that the answer is to establish a commission to inquire into the “legal status of women” and to “declare a policy as to distinctions, | based on sex, in law and adminis~ tration.” VIR Miss Butler Active The battle of the sexes material-

an Indianapolis lawyer and president of the B. P. W. federation, came to town last week-end and conferred with Senator Arthur Capper (R. Kas.) and Rep. ‘Fadjo Cravens (R. Ark.) who led the fight in the last session of congress, . - Rep. John M, Robison (R. Ky.), who inherited the issue from Rep. Cravens, said, “We will have hearings in the very near future, and I expect that the legislation has a better chance this session than before.” After a week-end conference with Capper, Miss Butler said, ‘““The women are up in arms on this thing and are insisting that it be passed. The bill introduced by Mrs, Douglas is presented in the thought that it will pacify us. But it won't.” Termed ‘Red Herring’ Mrs. Douglas said, countering this n criticism, that her objective was to establish a commission to find out what the chances are for getting women equal rights. “Even if the amendment which is proposed. passes,” she said, “It still has to go to the states for ratification. My bill is designed to make a study of the situation before we act.” - Robison said in reply that Mrs. Douglas’ purpose’ was to “draw a red herring across the trail of equal rights for women.” Proponents of the legislation said that organized labor was against their constitutional amendment because it would mean higher wages for women, and hence less of a bargaining power for men workers,
