Study Fish Food For Human Use

MIAMI BEACH, Fla, March 3 (U. P.),—The oceans of the world contain billions of tons of food. Science sooner or later must find a way to extract it for human use, Dr. F. Walton Smith said today. Dr. Smith, director of the marine laboratory of the -University of Miami, said new ways to produce food will have to be found or new and bigger wars will: be fought to cut down the world's population. Dr. Smith and his associates at the laboratory, located on the banks of Biscayne bay, currently are working on a project to study animal and plant life in the ocean. They are experimenting with planktons, or plankters, microscopic living Organisms upon which the fish in the sea and the oceans depend for their food. It is Dr. Smith's belief that enore] mous sources of food supply can come from these tiny organisms, particularly proteins and vitamins. They are so small that it would take 1000 of them side-by-side to measure an inch. Predicts Meatless Years "Tapping this source of food may prolong the day when most persons in. the world ‘will become Vegetarlans, Dr. Smith believes.

150 years there will be no meat left. * Man by that time, he believes, will have reserved the grass and all ‘plant life for himself, leaving nothing for the meat animal, such as cattle. Every scrap of corn will be used by humans and thereby none left for the pigs, he believes. Other scientists have said that tapping the food .sources in the oceans would. feed adequately the estimated half billion starving people in the world today. Dr. Smith said that the world ‘must do one of two things: Increase its food supply, or cut down its population.
