society, accompanied by the Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra and conducted by Malcolm Sargent. (Columbia, M-666, 19 12-inch records.) We have 10 tell you a bit about the history of this monumental work. Unquestionably it is one of the greatest of its kind ever conceived by the mind of man. Whereas lesser composers have labored for years over compositions

consequence, the flaming genius of Handel enabled him to write “The Messiah” in the incredibly brief; time of 34 days, Aug. 22 to Sept. 14, 1741. Shortly afterward he was invited by the lord lieutenant of Ireland to visit Dublin; and it was there, on April 13, 1742, that the work had its premiere. It met with instantaneous success. In order to accommodate a larger audience, ladies were asked to attend without hoops and gentlemen without swords. Inspiring Chorus King George II attended the London premiere in March, 1743, and the story is that he was 50; moved by the Hallelujah chorus that he arose and remained standing until the conclusion. Everyone else was obliged to rise when the king stood up, so it has been the custom since for the audience to stand during the singing of this inspiring chorus. i Handel later said that while | composing it, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God himself.” The first complete American performance of “The Messiah” was given in Boston on Christmas Day, 1818, but excerpts from the work had been sung in New York as early as 1770. From that day to this, audiences have flocked to hear
