‘GARY, Ind, Feb. 24 (v. P).—0Col. Thomas J. Hamilton, widely konwn electrical engineer and one of the founders of the American Legion, died today in ‘Mercy hospital after a three-months illness, He was 78. : Mr. Hamilton was president and general manager of the Gary Railways Co, at the time of his death. He also headed a loan company, A native of Belfast; Ireland, Mr. Hamilton was known for his engineering achievements on two continents, He engineered the Pittsburgh, Pa. cable car system, reorganized the Indianapolis Street Railways system just before world war I, and laid the first electric street car track in Gary in 1907, He planned the Havana, Cuba, electric and steam railway systenms, and in 1924 a statue of him w erected in a Havana park by Rotary international. During world war I, Mr. Hamilton became a lieutenant colonel while serving in France as engineer in charge .of converting the port of Brest to an allied port. Later, he was . decorated with the French legion of honor. Mr. Hamilton attended the first meeting in Paris in 1918 which iater led to the organization of the
