Three-Cent Stamp Pays Off As ‘Blackie’ Crashes Majors

By EDDIE ASH, Times Sports Editer

The

Indianapolis Indians made another cut in their player roster today with the sale of outfielder Wayne (Blackie) Blackburn to the

Cleveland Indians. It's on a conditional basis, since he’s going up to Manager Lou Boudreau’s American leaguers “on a look.” Tribe President Owen *J. Bush gave Blackburn permission to make

a deal for himself and Blackie sent club ‘president, and the - popular Victory field fiychaser was ordered to report to Manager Boudreau at the Tucson spring training camp. With the Indians six years except for time spent in the army, Blackburn, a lefthanded swinger, usually hit 300 or better until last year, when his average fell off to 267. His best year was 1944 when he hit 336. The Boston Braves purchased Blackie after the 1044 season but canceled the deal later when the player was inducted. Blackburn, who is 29, believes he can help Cleveland. He is the hustling type, always on the alert and jalways ready to run. He's an exceptionally good leadoff man, but

dians are making room for seasoned pastimers who will join them after the Pittsburgh Pirates trim
