TUESDAY; FEB. 18 1947 _ 400 Amateur Skaters | Await ‘Curtain Call’ ~~ For lce-O-Rama Show
‘High School Concert at 7 P.M. to Precede
Extravaganza Tomorrow i
: By ART WRIGHT . A full dress rehearsal with orchestra today put the finishing touches
on The Times Ice-O-Rama, More than 400 amateur skaters
the rehearsal this afternoon at the fairgrounds Coliseum, then prepared
to rest up until the “curtain call”.
The show, staged by The Times and the city department of parks
and recreation to ralse funds for the infantile paralysis drive, will start at 8 p. m., Thursday, Preceeding the ice extravaganza will be a concert by' Cathedral and Howe high school bands starting at 7:30 p,m. The doors will open at 6:30 p. m, After weeks of tiring rehearsals, the skaters, under the direction of Mrs, Norma Koster, have provided the ' fastest-moving = Ice-O-Rams staged in the three years of the show's existence. . Former Stars Helping It's the closest approach to a professional show yet made by the local amateurs, Much of the success is attributed to the work of stars of other Ice-O-Ramas. These include Oynthia Hanson, who at 11 years old has become one of the city's outstanding skaters; Rex Cook, often referred to as the Preddie Trenkler of the amateurs; Betsy Todd, whose thrilling routines of other years: have become even more sensational; Ann Bond, whose baton twirling on skates is‘an outstanding feat—and many others. The girls military drill on skates which brought a colorful finish to the past two shows again will perform. The Winter club, the Indianapolis Figure Skating clup, and othhave added their talents to the production. 15-Piece Orchestra Staging for the Ice-O-Rama Is the most professional ever attempted. Instead of “canned music” (phonographt records) a 15piece professional orchestra, directed by Walter Reuleaux, will play for all acts. A last-minute rush for tickets in addition to ‘the heavy advance sale indicates a record-breaking crowd. With plenty of mezzanine seats provided, it was estimated that several thousand of the 50 cent tickets would be available at the Coliseum box-offices Thursday night.
~ However, persons planning to at-
tend the show were urged to buy their tickets at downtown Infantile Paralysis booths tomorrow to

Play Filled With Barbs Pointed at Politics
The “State of the Union” got off to a laughing start last night before an appreciative audience which packed the English theater. It will run through Saturday. Conrad Nagel, :playing the lead, represents a business man who thinks he ‘has a chance to become president of his country, The nomination is offered him. Later he realizes he is supposed to bend to the will of policy-makers. With the aid of his wife, portrayed by Irene Hervey, he fights
the party’ eventually will have to ride with him and not he with it. The comedy is “heightened when the hero takes himself too seriously, becomes a pompous, stuffed shirt. His wife assumes the job of deflating his ego. While seemingly light and sparkling with comedy, the play is filled with barbs pointed at machine politics, machine politicians and voters. too lazy tq honestly protect their way of government.
