After 4-3 Triumph
Against Springfield
Our Hockey Boys Vault Over Pinsburgh Hornets in Western Division Standings
By BOB STRANAHAN Our Indianapolis Caps were Clevéland bound today for another of their “crucial” games with the Barons, after vaulting over Pitts. burgh into second place in the hot Western race. A tingling 4-to-3 verdict over Springfield in the Indians’ farewell appearance for the season before 5073 fans. at the Coliseum last night left Tommy Ivan's boys just thrée points behind the leading Barons.
Following tomorrow night's engagement in Cleveland, the Caps return Sunday for a meeting with Hershey's Eastern division leaders.
2 This also is the Bears' final game
at the Coliseum during the scheduled y, although the Ivanmen have high hopes of seeing’ them here at least once more in the Calder cup series. Stocky, bushy-haired Hugh Millar basked in the hero role today following the bruising battle with the Indians, Hughie broke into a Springfield rush with less than four minutes of the game remainIng, went in on Goalie Floyd Perras in a solo rush and whanged in the winning marker. This was the climatic and knock-| out punch of a four-goal blast during the final period for the Caps in a rough, hard checking and none too well whistled ehgagement, - Officials Butch Kealing and Alan Shields seemed short of wind or something. At. least they were reluctant to toot their whistles
‘ll © during some flagrant Springfield i holding and interference. Only four
penalties were called all evening,
Vi one being concerned with a little
matter of an Indian player taking part In a scrimmage without a stick.
Coach Ivan, generally not too boisterous over such matters, was considerably put out and didn't mince ‘words in saying so.
Springfield t in front after four minutes tight play when John Quilty batted in a rebound on. Bill Gooden's angle shot. The Caps also failed to penetrate the Springfield defense in the middle’ perfod although the breaks largly were in their favor, Two Indians were forged to leave the
game on injuries, Bill Summerhill
when struck in the back of the
neck by a puck and Paul Courteawy
when hit in“the head by a stick. {Then to add to Springfield man{power worries, Alex Motter drew a
|penalty for playing without a stick.
Fernand Gauthier and Les Doug-
las scored two goals in 25 seconds| .
as the final period was barely under way to give Indianapolis the lead. Eddie Kobussen tied it at 2-all with a long side shot. Then Bob Wiest outfeinted Perras on an unassisted marker to again put the Caps in front, Harry Frost sent a long sizaler past Goalie Red Almas midway in the period, but Millar's dash broke this deadlock.
