Existing Law
Is Better, | § Assembly Told
Scattered Small Units Criticized
The Indianapolis Chamber of| Commerce today urged the general assembly not to tamper with the Indianapolis sanitary district law, In a statement opposing a bill to} set up scattered small sanitary dise tricts in the county, the chamber pointed out that the existing] statue will do the same job more efficiently. . Under the new bill, ‘county commissioners could set up new districts on petition of 51 per cent of | the property owners, then build sewers and other facilities.
Charge Double Payments
Principal objection raised by the Chamber of Commerce was that the new bill makes every property owner in the’ county pay taxes to set up these scattered, local san-|. itary districts, That means, the statement said, that city property owners pay again for facilities which they already have provided for themselves. At the same time, many farmers in the county must help pay for|. , sewers from which they never will ’ benefit. Under existing law, thé chamber pointed out, suburban areas may

million worth of property has been omitted from tax duplicates. In a small town in Clay county, he said, nine new houses have not been added to the duplicates. : The proposed measure would equalize evaluations and spread the tax burden among a greater number of people, Mr. Dye added. What's a Trolley Worth
He said another bill authored by the board would spread utility property taxes on a similar basis. Mr. Dye said in one Hoosier city, trackless trolleys are assessed at $8000 each, while in another city, the assessed value for the same type vehicle is $2000 each. He also said that one telephone company pays $100'a year per mile of wire while another pays only $40 a year per mile, Seek ‘Taxing Engineers’ The re-assessment measure would set up a separate department to make uniform methods of assessment, with a director at a salary of $4800 a year and five taxing engineers at $4000 a year each. Under’ the board’s plan, a $6000 house in a small city would be assessed the same as a $6000 house in a larger city. This practice not in effect now, Mr. Dye sald. The utility tax measure would add provisions for taxing such warborn items as the automobile tele-

‘GOP Caucus Must Act on Each
Senate Majority Floor-leader W. Van Ness, (R. Valparaiso) said today -“the Republicans will approve no salary increases for any elected official unless sanctioned by caucus. . “This policy does not apply to the question of school teachers’ salaries,” Senator Van Ness emphasized. He said a senate majority caucus yesterday decided that the salaries of state, county, township and city officials would not bé raised unless the G. O. P. members of the upper house agreed to increase them in caucus. In yesterday’s session Republicans agreed the per diem of county
