WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 (U. PJ.

| —Atomic scientists have realized the

age-old alchemists’ dream of changing other elements into gold but the revers® process is ‘the mote profitable. A’ spokesman for the atomic energy commission said that gold has been made in atomic piles. But the element used is platinum, which is costlier than gold. So it is still cheaper to mine the yellow metal than to make it by atomic bombardment. Moreover, scientists have discov-

| ered it is more ‘profitable to convert

gold into one of several varieties of the element mercury. This particular variety, or isotope, is expected to provide the world with a new standard of measurement, the commission official said. # The current standard is platinum, which expands or shrinks with changes in temperature. The platinum bar from which measures for the foot, inch or yard are derived is kept in carefully regulated vaults at the bureau of standards’ here. The particular kind of mercury made from gold, however, can sup-

not vary in size under any conditions of temperature or atmosphere. Placed in a spectroscope, the mercury gives off a band of light of constant length and width.
