The senate also passed a flood control measure which would enable rural districts to deal directly with the federal government in the construction of levies. A..bill which provides an unlimjted mortgage exemption on vet erans’ property tax remained in committee despite its = authors’ pleas yesterday to bring it to the floo¥ of the senate. Senators Walter Vermillion (D. Anderson) and John A. Kendall (R. Danville), authors of the meas~ ure, asked the senate to vote the bill out of committee. Their motion was tabled, 23 to 13.! Senator Vermillion declared that since a bonus “seems out. of the question” at this session of the legislature, the bill would be a means of giving ex-servicemen “at least a little something” for their service. The tax exemption would also include widows of veterans, and would allow that part of property covered by mortgage to be tax free,
