To Be Sent Abroad
WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (U. P.)— This country’s atomic piles are pro~ ducing radioactive elements in great quantity. It may be feasible soon to share [them with other countries for bio~ logical research and medical use. An atomic energy commission offi{cial said today there seemed to be no reason why these research tools “should not be sent abroad” if the supply continues to exceed detmestie |demand. He pointed. out that ' these byproducts of the atomic pile do not have any bearing on the security of atomic bomb secrets. : Radioactive elements are in effect “atomic spies.” By means of their invisible radiations, scientists can use them to trace the course through animal bodies or plant tissues of substances containing them. The radiations can be detected and followed with Geiger counters. Through these elements science hopes to discover among other things how cancer develops, how plants turn sunlight into matter, and what happens to sugar.in persons with diabetes. Since the first delivery was made last August to the Barnard -Cancer hospital in St. Louis, the commission has sent 300 shipments of radioactive elements to hospitals, educational institutions, and industrial research laboratories all over the country and to Hawaii. The controlling factor today Is not a shortage of many of these elempnts, but of personnel qualified to handle them, sa commission oficial said. “Only skilled technicians,” he
Dr. Paul C. Aebersold of the Oak Ridge, Tenn, atomic plant told the United Press that “encouraging results and new discoveries” have come about since the first shipment | last August. a
