Maybe she. Mr. Haswell couldn't have told you why, but her bread kept fresh longer because of this,

Tastes ‘Neutral’

Chemists have come up with the idea that this kind of bread tastes “neutral,” that is, it has less flavor to compete with the flavor of but ter, or jelly, or cinnamon sugar. or whatever is put on the bread. Rep. Shaler is a big man and anyone can tell by looking at him that he is speaking from experience when he says he thinks potato bread is better than all-wheat bread. He evidently has eaten a lot ‘of both kinds. But Rep. Shafer also is a states~ man, and he urges eating potato bread as a way to save the gountry.

Surplus Crop

The farmers in the 12 potato-rais-ing states raised 100 million. bushels more potatoes last year than the market could absorb, The potato price support program cost the treasury $80° million and may cost the government even more this coming season. Becretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson tried every way he knew to use up potatoes, even to making whisky out of them, but still 20 million bushels of the 1946 crop have spoiled, or will spoil. Potatoes can't be shipped, like corn or wheat, to Europe and Asia, where millions of people are hungry. They spoil. The shipping expenses are too high. Has It Figured Out But Mr. Shafer has figured everything out. If the people will buy potato bread, he says, the bakers will use four pounds of potato flour for every 100 pounds of wheat four, and that will use up next year's 100 | million bushel surplus of potatoes. But, you say, won't it create a surplus of wheat flour? Not at all, says Mr. Shafer, Potato bread is so much better {that people will eat more. There {won't be any surplus.
