Takes’ Ton, In Kunnel's y Tough Ten
The Tough Ten— AST WEEK'S crop of upsets not only proved too tough for the * Old Kunnel, but it hit the customers hard in his Tough Ten contest, too. There wasn't a perfect picker among. the hundreds who © ‘submitted blanks, § There were eight, however, who ¢ame within one selection ox filling out an okay blank, Here they are, picking fans, the near-perfect pickers:
GEORGE. FERLING, 5832 Beechwood, Indianapolis _ JAMES H, HAVENS, R, R. 12, Box 233; Indisnapolis : MARVIN ERISMAN, Wanamaker, Ind. ' PAUL SALITROS, 2021 Adams, Indisnapolis GERALD WILLIAMS, 39 N.° Bolton, Indianapolis RUSSELL KENNEDY, Shirley, Ind. JOHN RUMPEL, 3250 N. Capitol, Indianapolis ERNEST A. RIEGNER, 921 Cedar, Indianapolis Mr. Kennedy wrote modestly that he “wasn't an expert” but his selections belied his note. His only error was in thinking that Evansville Central would beat Jasper, (But many, many of the other pickers missed that one, too.) Mr. Riegner and Mr. Rumpel waded through the first nine correctly before stubbing their toes on that Tech-Muncie outcome.
Sad VY =n" 8
. = =» Strangely enough, Jasper's victory over Central wasn't nearly so surprising to the picking fans as was Madison's triumph over Huntingburg. That was the “most missed” of any of the selections. 8 8 =» Cn 5» Twenty-three of the experts had eight of the 10 correct and beat the Kunnel by one selection. He had seven right to bring his total to 60 in 88 for the season and an average of .682. Two hundred and eighty-one of the pickers were equally adept at calling the winners as the Kunnel, but he managed to beat the rest of you,
this week, picking only the games which he believes are the toughest in the lot to dope. ; The rules are the same as always. Just send your blank or selections on another piece of paper to Short Shots at The Times. The envelopes must be postmarked not later than Thursday midnight. 80. you think you're the Perfect Picker, eh? Well, just try it once and see. . ” » » » » (All Friday games)

forcing Illinois, one of the leagues out a 59-58 decision, In the second Saturday clash the Wildcats, who earlier had tripped Io a and almost beat Wisconsin, showed they were no momentary threat by pushing ‘Minnesota into overtime before the Gophers could gain a 63-61 vie= | tory. While Ohio State and Northwestern already have lost too many | games to win the title, both thus served notice they will have a hand in deciding the winner. Wisconsin has to play both teams before the season ends, and one more loss would cost the Badgers their undisputed lead and tie them with any one of the teams which lost only two games thus far—providing the double losers continue to win, The Badgers get theh first test this week against Iowa tonight, In the second match tonight Indiana, one of the double losers, faces Michigan, which has dropped only one game. Wednesday Illinois and Purdue meet at Lafayette in another contest between first. division teams.
