‘LOS ANGELES, Jan, 30 (U. Morgenthau Diary Probe to Begin

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (U. P.).— Senate Republicans beat President Truman to the punch today with a decision to look into the case of the “Morgenthau diary.” They plan to draft a law, if needed, for the protection of government files. Senator Homep Ferguson (R. Mich.) said he would ask the senate executive expenditures committee to investigate the case at once. Committee Chairman George 2, Aiken (R. Vt.) said the group would undertake the inquiry if requested to do so. The case involves the charge of Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder that former Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr. had taken treasury documents with him when he left the cabinet. The papers were said to be con. tained in a diary, soon to be published. Mr. Morgenthau compiled the diary during his 12 years as a Roosevelt cabinet member. Presidential Secretary Charles G. Ross said yesterday Mr. Truman might ask congress for legislation to prevent outgoing federal executives from taking official documents with them.
