.|German Pastor Stirs Audience
Biy EMMA RIVERS MILNER Times Church: Editor Pasitor Martin. Niemoeller counts 4s worthwhile his years spent Aas “Hitler's special prisoner” because of spiritual gains. The German pastor last night addressed an audience of an estimated 11,000 persons in Cadle tabernacle as guest of the Indiana State Pastors conference. The conference will close today in the Third Christian church. His talk was built around the thought that where two or three people are gathered together for Christian worship Jesus is present. Series of Spiritual Episodes His sermon was really the narrative of a series of spiritual episodes experienced in concentration camps. After each he quoted the words {of Jesus in Matthew 18:20, causing {the passage to beat like a refrain {in the mind of the listener: “Wherever two or three are gathiered together in my fame, there lam I in the midst of them.” | He described how .Hitler got rid of the church as such because it preached the commandments of |God—"‘thou shalt not kill, steal, lie, commit adultery.” National socialism, Pastor Nie{moeller recalled, demanded that Germans kill, steal, lie and commit (adultery.

Neither could he deistroy it. - The German. pastor told how he was stripped of all his belongings— his wedding ring, wrist watch, letters and his Bible—when He was put into the concentration camp. He demanded the return of the Scriptures and, strangely enough, the guard brought it to him. Thereafter, as Pastor Niemoeller walked in the courtyard for daily exercise, he whispered Bible verses for fellow prisoners looking oué barred windows. They had no Bibles of their own. The group became one of the new little churches of Germany, separated by barbed wire and iron bars and, except for his former school mate among them, knowing nothing of each other. But
he repeated that Jesus was in the

The climax of the address came when Pastor Niemoeller described a worship service and “Holy -Supiper” at which he officiated just a few months before he was released on Christmas eve, 1944. The group which requested that he conduct worship consisted of an Englishman, & Norwegian, a native of Jugoslavia, a Dutchman and a Macedonian. Each belonged to a different branch of the Christian faith. When these natives of countries called German enemies asked the German pastor to lead them in worship and to celebrate the communion, he says he “knew then why he had been required to spend those years a prisoner.” “All barriers went down,” he said, “for this was the church universal.”
