Population Mirrors Propaganda Line
By WILLIAM McGAFFIN., Times Foreign Correspondent - PRAGUE, Jan, 24-Probably reflecting the official propaganda line, Russia's people are extremely critical of Britain, but noncommittal about America. This is the view of foreign visitors who have ha er opportunity to compare Russia
| time Russia. Ef In conversa~ jo tions, these sources sald, Soviet citizens give the impression that © everyone in Rus- .. sla is opposed to Britain: But there is no such criticism of America; the average Russian will say nothing either for or against,
Asked why they are against BritAln, Russians ceply that Britain
Seeks American support in order]
to rule the world—Moscow’s old
~ propaganda line about “world im-
perialism,”
Russians speak much more freely now, say my informants, but are smart enough to stick to the line taught them.
Not a word will be spoken against the government. If the conversation
* 1s continued long enough, they will
indicate by certain replies that they do not consider everything in Russia perfect. Living Conditions Blamed
Citizens wi]l confide that they dislike Foreign Minister - Ernest Bevin and England's political attitude. In the same breath they
. Will praise Soviet Foreign Minis-
ter Viacheslav -M. Molotov for “knocking Bevin's ears down.” But as the talk progresses, they will manage to admit that Mr. Molotov is not always so clever. Much of this reaction, it is said, is inspired by the terrible living conditions in post-war Russia. It stems in no small part from Red army men discontented after having tasted higher standards of living in outside countries. Thousands of Soviet soldiers now in the former Polish Ukraine, annexed by Russia, are “wanting out,” say these visitors. . Afraid that another war will hit Russia soon, and fed up with conditions in general, they are all
_walting.a chance to skip dcross the
border. Demobilized and without ‘weapons, they still are in uniform since no *“clvvies” are available. Some are said to be Jews and Poles who fought with the Red army, or Russians gretending to be Jews or Poles.
