The disappearance of the documents was discovered when John E. = Peurifoy took up his duties today |= = * as acting assistant secretary of state |= in charge of administration. Mr. Peurifoy was- appointed yesterday by Dean Acheson, undersecretary of state for political affairs, acting for Secretary George * C. Marshall, as part of a new shake_up in the department. In his new post, Mr. Peurifoy is responsible for security, among other things, and thus for the files now missing. Transfer Kept Quiet However, the papers were removed - ‘without - Mr. Peurifoy’s knowledge, _it is understood. Secretary Marshall and Mr. Acheson also knew nothing of the transfer of the papers, it is believed.
