Omdr. James Downing Nelson | was killed yesterday in the crdih of a navy night fighter during maneuvers off Oahu, his wife, Mrs. Joan Pfarrer Nelson, daughter of Mr. and. Mrs. Henry A. Pfarrer, 6148 N. Tiinois st, has been informed, Omdr, Nelson's plane crashed after pulling out from a dive in a simulated attack. A destroyer recovered his body. A native of Grand Rapids, Minn, Cmdr, Nelson lived there before entering the navy in 1938. He served two years in the South Pacific and was transferred to Barber's Point, Jan. 1. He was executive officer of a night squadron there. : Surviving are his wife, Barber's Point, T, H.; an aunt, Mrs. T. J. O'Brien, Grand Rapids, Minn., and an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. R A.
