. Undefeated Evansville: Five Due for Rest

“By JAMES E, WALTERS United Press Sports Writer Evansville Céntral's Bears, “coasting" under the expert handling of Coféh Glen Bretz, held their No. 1 ranking in- Indiana high school basketball today déspite two close calls during the past -week in games they figured to win by 25 points. Several things pointed to the obvious assumption that Brets, who needed a students’ strike to keep his job last spring, had taken: the fine edge off his undefeated crew in preparation for a stretch run to the state championship, First, and foremost, was the fact that the Bears scarcely worked up & sweat In practice last week. Secondly was the fact that Central didn't. figure to meet any competition from Jan. 1, when it won the star-studded Lafayette holiday tournament, uiitil Jan. 31, when it was scheduled to host once-beaten Jasper in a game that probably will decide the Southern Indiana Athe letic conference championship. Last week, the Bears squeezed past Evansville Memotal, 35-33, and barely solved Washington's possession - game, 29-22, with a lastminute flurry of goals. * This week, Central has only one game—against city rival Reitz, a team. it trounced soundly in December, 45-27. Then the Bears take ft easy until they play Jasper on the 31st. The Reitz game is set for tonight. With Central apparently in no danger of losing its top-billing for 12 days at least, here's the eighth weekly United Press statewide list: 1. Evansville Central (won 14lost 0). 2. Hammond High (12-1). 3. Terre Haute Garfield (11-0), _4. Jasper (12-1).

5. South Bend Central (11-2). |

6. East Chicago Washington . (10-1). 7. Ft. Wayne South Side (10-1). 8. Lafayette Jeff (12-3). 9. New Albany (10-1). 10. Huntington (13-1). Next best: 11. Gary Froebel (108), 13. Columbus (11-3), 13. Bedford (12-3), 14. Rochester (11-3), 15. Huntingburg (9-4), 16. Muncie Burris. (9-3), 17. Muncie Central (8-3), 18. Lawrendeburg (10-0), 19. Seymour (10-4), 20. Shelbyville (10-5), 21. Indianapolis Shortridge (11-2), 23. La Porte (9-4), 24. Kokomo (9-5), 34. Elkhart (10-4), 25. Madison (8-2), Last week's major casualties were Huntington, - which saw its 13game -winning streak go by the boards at Ft. Wayne South Side, 39-31, and Bedford, which blew a big halftime lead and its big ten berth: by loging to Seymour's upset

climbed from fifth to fourth when ‘it rapped Huntingburg, 45-35; and South Bend Central slipped a notch despite winning two games. The first three teams remained the same. East Chicago | jumped three notches after two
