. 4 r \ As a dancer, Barbara is a goon. That's where technique comes in, since it takes a fine dancer to cavort with such grotesque ineptitude. : Her unsuccessful debut at the high-society party for the “poor children” is one of the big scenes. It involves a wonderful voice-and-pantomime burlesque of a jazz band, with Voli Geller as a black-net~ stockinged jazz singer. Miss Geller's wholly admirable performance gives a.kind of European-eye view of American weakness for hot mammas. Funny ‘Caro Nome’ In the.next scene, Miss Geiler, as Barbara's sister back home, entertains her suitor with the funniest rendition of “Caro Nome” I've ever heard. To begin with, “Caro Nome” is funny anyway. Miss Geiler's singing, like Blanche Aubry’s ime

personation of a French music-hall

chanteuse later in the ballet, out Alecs Mr. Templeton at his very best. Inspired by a. painter friend (Werner Belmont), Barbara eventually finds a career as a clown dancer in vaudeville. Thai vaudeville sequence reaches a climax of almost excrucidting comic intensity. “Eternal Spain” (the title alone is full of implications); done by Manuela Espada and Robert Rosselat, does to Spanish-darnice teams what “Don Quixote” to chivalry, Space forbids - extended of the Haep-Haép family their Wonderchild (obvious translation of “Wunderkind,” which word has rich comic overtones.) Mr. Marx Out- -Harpoed Barbara's piano duet with the Strong Man (Richard Wyatt), which, not to be repetitious, outHarpos Mr. Marx, deserves more than brief mention, like dozens of other superbly comic things in the

ballet. Miss: Schoop has beautiful spon-

taneity and charm, Her choreographic imagination is an indescribable compound’ of contemporary with wistful naivete. gentle kidding of phony, pretentious and: fussy people, she reveals herself as real and likable. Last night's big audience gave Nico Kaufmann and Kurt Sojger, duo-planists, enthusiastic acclaim for their fine accompaniments. Tone, attack, precision were, as the navy says, 4.0. Music Is Refreshing Mr, Kaufmann wrote the music; which, in the waltz-time “Barbara” theme in F, recalls Richard Strauss’ “Rosenkavalier” and elsewhere has a kind of Darius Milhaud, slightlydecadent pathos. That also is contemporary European, and refresh. ingly different from what we customarily get from radio and screen. Any critic’ who sees the Trudi Schoop ballet must suffer from an embarrassment of riches. There's just too much incredibly good stuff in “Barbara” for adequate description, Let's hope Miss Alwes brings the troupe ‘back next season.
