about
“Swell Guy”
Wien I first announced that I was
[113 KISS.
[LL LULL AS [EAE GED
going to produce “Swell Guy,” a picture with a startling off-center theme, seasoned Hollywood figures thitew up their hands. Their advice to me was: “Mark, don’t risk it. The public is not ready for such an adult film. When you tamper with people’s illusions of good and evil, you are breaking
the basic rule of picture making.”
We, in the space of a year, “Swell Guy” is the second motion picture that the boys warned me not to make. The first was Ernest Hemingway's “The Killers,” and I was told I was inviting disaster. The results seem to suggest, possibly, that what Holly. wood needs today is a few more such
disasters,
P ortiaps. this time, the boys are right. But they’ve got to prove it to me— and, in producing “Swell Guy,” Pve again gambled that they're wrong. I think it is high time that motion pictures grew up to tell the truth about people . . . the truth about men and women.
A; ‘the’ Hollywood press preview, many of the critics thought “Swell Guy” more gripping than “The Killers.” Several didn’t like it as well. My personal opinion wouldn't count for much, so I'd rather not give it. The public decides these things, and nobody else, And that's strictly okay with me . , ,
Yiaris ever so much. And I do hope
