Sleep Speeded By Routine
By ALICIA HART NEA Staff Writer RATHER THAN depend upon a sleeping pill to induce slumber and pay the penalty the next day of having a drugged, dull feeling, learn to pop off like an untroubled babe by establishing regular sleep habits. The first of these is turning in at exactly the same hour and going through the same pre-retiring routines. ;
The exercise that you take before bedtime to induce sleep—mild walking, easy stretching or bending, provided you don't overdo it—will ease tensions that keep you awake. » 2 » A NIGHT-CAP is a send-off if it's mildly hot. other day and age, too. A group of girls out at Washinghigh school, . however, have found the road to solving their problems and their “Mr, Anthony” is Mrs. Dorothy” Hobson, a teacher in the home economics department. Mrs. Hobson teaches a course in Family Relations — and the whole business of life and its funny ways are discussed.
2 » = TALKING OVER these problems is the most important function of the class — they find listening to others helps solve their own problems. ; As an opener in the class the girls voted on the good habits they wanted most. They-are to: 1. improve appearance; 2. be more courteous; 3. do home work; 4. improve posture; 5. control temper; 6. be helpfu! to others; 7. make more friends; 8. get into school activities; 9. save money; 10. speak more clearly, and 11. study harder. It seems the things they want the most are in this order: 1. good health; 2. happiness; 3. good job; 4. husband; 5. travel; 6. happy married life; 7. security; 8. a home, and 9. many friends. * : Mrs. Hobson suggested a card file system for friends — they each started a file of their friends’ names, "addresses, ‘birthdays, etc. — something always to remind them of dates and names. 8 - » DURING THE SEMESTER the girls have made notebooks on family relations — they include everything from pictures and newspaper and magazine articles to poems. Each notebook is a sort of reference

for them — something they may want to read over in later years. Book reports were given in this group, too. But none of the “extras” were compulsory. Mrs. Hobson wanted them to enjoy the course the way they liked best — but all of them made notebooks and all gave book reports. Besides the many discussions on current teen-age problems, the girls learned about the care of children, , finances, neighborhoods, and children in the home. ® = = MRS. HOBSON is “sold” on the course — she has taught it for several years, along with Miss Gretchen Mueller, head of the department. Although it is usually alternated with a home management course, this year, it will be offered both semesters. “Both of these courses should be compulsory,” Mrs. Hobson believes. For she feels the preparation for married and home life is as important as schooling for a job.
