Austin: ‘Veto Is No Escape’
CHICAGO, Jan, 17 (U. P)~— Warren R. Austin, U. 8. representative to the United Nations, said last night that use of the veto by any of the Big Five nations to escape its obligation to keep peace would result in “nullification” of the United Nations charter.
Mr. Austin, addressing 700 governors, legislators “and other state
the council of state governments, said that “no country can veto itself out of its obligations under the charter.” The former Vermont Republican senator defended the veto principle and flouted the idea that it “legalizes aggression.” -

Excise Extension WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (U. P.).— "The house ways and means committee today unanimeusly approved a -bill carrying out President Truman’s request for continuation of high wartime excise taxes. The bill was introduced yesterday by Rep. Robert A. Grant (R. Ind.). Mr. Truman had asked for a one-year extension of the wartime rates on sale of such items as liquor, jewelry, and furs. Under present law, the levies would be reduced July. 1. This would cost the treasury up to $1,500,000,000 a year. The committee in a closed session approved extension of the taxes indefinitely. The excise tax bill may be the first important legislation to reach the house floor. Chairman Harold Knutson (R. Minn.) of the ways and means committee said he would seek unanimous consent of the house next week to accept the bill appréved by the committee and speed it along to the senate.
