Records Show Both Run in Parallel Spirals With Children Victims of Marriage Failures
a a eer re ere ee files of Marion county courts).
By NOBLE REED SINCE STATISTICS show conclusively that most juvenile delin-
quency stems from failures of their.parents in marriage” authorities here agree ‘that pre-marital education would reduce both divorces and
crime among children,
! Both run in parallel spirals in the court statistics, In 1940 when only 2800 divorce cases were filed fete, | Juvenile court |
records show a low rate of commitments for that year, " Three years later the number of divorces jumped to 4300 and juvenile court records on the number of delinquent children went up with it proportionately. In 1945, one of the worst years for juvenile delinquency, the number of divorces jumped to -an alltime high of 5600. - Last year the divorce rate here was near 7000 and juvenile delinquency equalled the 1945 mark. » » » ALTHOUGH judges, lawyers and social workers agree that there is no cure-all for the divorce problem, most of them are convinced that: more educational preparation for marriage would check the rapidly rising divorce rates. They are becoming more convinced of the value of pre-marital education after studying the case histories of thousands of marriages that went on the rocks because of failure of couples to understand simple human relationships. Most judges and social workers predict that a marriage counseling clinic in Indianapolis, if conducted by experts, would keep 'hundreds of couples out of the divorce courts. - »
» ALSO JUDGES are stressing the |
need for more medical care and psychiatric treatment. Testimony in hundreds of divorce
cases has revealed marital failures: that sprung entirely from physical]
and mental defects that could have been corrected. - Superior court records show that a large per cent of women committed to insane institutions suffered mental breakdowns as the direct result of constant strain of emotional conflicts in their marriages.
Also, divorce testimony in scores! of cases every year indicated that! sexual maladjustments, the cause
of a large per cent of divorces, could have been prevented by early medical attention and counseling. =n »
. MANY MARRIAGES, judges learn
from testimony, were based upon) nothing more than selfish motives,
on the part of one or the other, .One case last week revealed that an Indianapolis woman, owner of an .apartment building, married her janitor in order to assure his stay-| ing on the job during the manpowet. shortage. It lasted less than six month,
She sued the janitor for divorce “oni
the ground that ne refused to work. She testified that two days after! they were married, he refused to do! any of the chores around the building. She was granted. a decree.
Judges say far too many wives get ' married with no, mctive in mind}
other than getting a “meal ticket.”
