| note in her collection,
By LOUISE FLETCHER @ Times Woman's Editor NEW YORK, Jan. 10. — Don't look now—bus there are indica-
tions that the shoulder pad is
about to be given the ‘cold shoulder. When the dean of American name di Carnegie — starts paring away at shoulder “stuffing,” you can bet that the T-square shoulderline has a dim future. And that's what Miss Carnegie
last night by fashion writers here for the New York Dress Institute’s press week, Carnegie
~ whittles down the thickness of
shoulder pads. In some cases, she Just forgets the whole padding
+ business.
The result is an approach to the slope of the normal shbulderline. In order that the change may not seem too abrupt, Miss Carnegie is working a few tricks at the top of the armhole. One of them, the outstanding is the fichu neckline—a flange of fabric g around the shoulders and ex or dipping beyond the shoulder point. When she doesn’t use this 1947 adaptation of Granny's kerchief scarf, she lets the shoulders of the dress reach to the upper arm, past where the regular armhole would be. 2 » KHiplines Curve, Too At other times she uses what she calls a fichu cuff. This is a curving band of fabric applied
; around the shoulders and across
the tops of the arms. These techniques, serve as a gentle reihtroduction to the normal shoulderline.

LINEN FOR THE COCKTAIL HOUR—Hattie Carnegie's "dove pink" less linen cocktail dress with rounded low collar‘and big patch pockets, is from her spring 1947 collection. Tiny black soutache leaf sprays and miniature jet, looking like French knots, are spaced over the dress. The belt is black patent.
Typical of the fichu line is a dove pink linen cocktail dress, soutache and jet embroidered. In this dress, as in several pastel hand-loomed or print or taf-
feta frocks with similar lines, the
wide shallow neckline may be shoved down over the upper arms to make the outfit become a short evening dress. The newly curving shoulderline is matched by curving hiplines. Flat hip drapery (caught up sithen front. an. hock .Qecs Wns curve ‘emphasizing in asgveral frocks. In keepihg with her preference for mere gradual silhouette change, Miss Carnegie is not going to extremes in lengthening or widening her skirts. Daytime hem- lengths are about 15 inches from ‘the floor. “Five and after” frocks may be ballet length — a few inches above the ankle. And evening dresses range from ankle to floor length, some of them curving from ankle length in front to floor length in back. Beautiful Fabrics All types of suit jackets are shown by Miss Carnegie. Fitted styles appear as well as boxy and loose circular types. Her perennial short coat this year is navy blue, single-breasted, brass-bute toned, and it sports squarenotched collar and cuffs. She uses the loose raglan style for one collarless red coat in full length.
\g 5 » td The beautiful fabrics she has chosen do much'to create a light, almost weightless look in her collection. She shows pure silk tissues, fine wool voils, Chinese damasks, Swiss embroidered organdies, pure Irish linen, pure silk crepes and prints, light worsteds and tissue woolens, Three designers whose showIngs preceded Miss Carnegie’s yesterday were Clare Potter of the Charles Nudelman firm, Joset Walker of David Goodstein,
Ine, and Tina Leser of the Ed- |
win Foreman company. _ Mrs. Potter lines up with the advocates of the natural shoulderline. She claims there's a trend to. the rounder shoulders which she has always liked. (Both she and Claire McCardell already had shown completely unpadded shoulders in their collections of recent seasons.) Another new Potter note is a stiffened, curved fabric belt, flat in

She is still using the hand-painted fabrics she likes so well, too. Joset Walker's playclothes avoid the loose, wrapped look characteristic of the work of several other designers in this field. armhole ribbing. Casually rolled back cuffs appear on both short and long sleeves. Tina Leser, a newcomer to the Dress Institute group, originally won fashion acclaim with brief sun and swim styles and with her hand-painted blouses. Both are represented in her 1947 spring and resort collections. She’ designs many of her fabrics and a headliner this season is a raintbw trout print of ombre stripes overlaid with a fishscale design. This appears in jersey-lined strapless one-piece swimsuits as well as in sundresses and tie-on cabana skirts. She also uses green fish net for capes, scarfs and tie-on overskirts. Her hand-painted blouses for this season carry out such motifs as hunting scenes, picnics and even the circus. One especially pretty one shows shaded clouds with streaks of “rain” done in tiny silver séquins. For at-home wear she divides her interest between a shepherdess silhouette and an oriental theme, The former covers an underskirt with a shepherdess dress having an off-shoulder line framed by a fabric flange. The full skirt, open at the front, has low panier "drapery. : ; There's a touch of whimsy in the oriental side of the picture. It’s a one-legged skirt, no fooling. The left leg has a trousered look with a cuff snapped about thes ankle. Then, all of a sudden, what started out to be pants decides to become a wraparound skirt. Which it does. Don't ask how.
