By LOUISE FLETCHER Times Woman's Editor NEW YORK; Jan. 9—New York designers aren't offering ; any courses in the three R's this season. But they do haye some CO08tumes that hark back to those many of us wore when we were in grammar grades. Not only there pleated skirts all the place,: but there's the 1947 version of the middy blouse. In Adele Simpson's line of Mary Lee, the middy lehgth is de-
for pleated-skirt dresses, but in overblouses for long-jacket suits. Joseph Halpert even does the middy top in a dressy black version, with a tiered jabot of black lace posed on the right hip.
He repeats the middy theme, too, in an evening dress with a longtorso top of white ending in a cuff flange where it sets onto a black
lection. “Along with the business there is a Prince line. In a full-length suit skirt, about five inches of fabric are removed from ter front of the coat to hem. Another effect is done in a bengaline over’a frock. Other Reig favor. ites are the flared back bolero and a 1910 dolman hug-me-tight effect in suit jackets of varied lengths. With a gray High-waisted

In addition to playing pleats across the board, Adele Simpson is betting on sack suits this season. These have jackets that are straight cut above a close hipline, giving the top of the figure a V line. Sometimes the jackets have two vents, at the side backs. One, fastening with .a single button high at the front, is slightly cutaway.
. . . Peek Into Future Boleros, always a favorite with Mrs. Simpson, ring in a change with torso length underblouses winding up with swathed hip drapery hiked up at one side. This has a Spanish look, particularly when the bolero is edged with ball fringe as it was in one navy outfit. This designer makes: muchof spiral drape wraparound skirts which provide a surplice line in the skirt, frequently wrapping to the back of the dress. She also ‘shows many of the scarf dresses she likes so well—the scarfs attached at shoulder or waist. These may be draped as cowls or shawls or permitted to float. free, Mrs. Simpson yesterday offered a peek into the future with a couple of post-war faprics in ~non-tarnishable metallic yarn was interwoven with wool or cotton. The metal is non-tarnishable— and washable—because it's aluminum. It is coated with film (the picture-taking stuff) and the color (gold and copper) is photographed permanently on the coated aluminum thread. For silver, it's left as it is. Sclence is wonderful, isn't it?
