TUXEDO FRONT SUIT—The tuxedo-front suit gets top billing in Bruno's spring

navy wool, this one has a deep scoop neckline showing an expanse

a right flank position. Again—a garment may be completely surrounded by four mammoth pockets buttoned at their tops. Miss McCardell, former advocate of the briefest swim suit styles possible, this year is covering up the midriff with one-piece strapless styles for the most part. She does show a two-piece bare mide riff number wtih a cowl halter top. And most of the suits have accompanying play - skirts with elastic waistbands. # =

Dark Cottons Fabric interests lies in her use of .deep and dark toned cottons (both plaids and stripes) and in a Portugese-inspired group of play clothes which combine two different plaids in the same outfit. Pauline Trigere, for our money one of the top four or five New York designers, is not only lengthening the silhouette. She’s straightening it out, too. Most pronounced example of this is in her suit jackets which are almost straight in back and are only semi-fitted in front. With their below-hip length, they provide a spanking new look. For most of her suits Miss Trigere shows matching weskits, with scooped out neck lines. The slanting lines of hex inset suit pockets frequently continue on around the hip. The long torso line finds expression in several styles. There's the straight-cut wrap-around coat, suggestive of Chanel's designs in the twenties except that it has Dbloused elbow-length sleeves. And then there's the dress with beltless torso length top which meets a knee flounce skirt or circular cut falling into unpressed pleats. Asymmetrical closings on coats and jackets, numbers of short-sleeved coats, and 6 inset tunic fronts on skirts are other Trigere highlights. Two of the prettiest dresses in her collection are garden party frocks in ballerina length. A gray eyelet has a circular skirt and is brightened by a waist line cluster of pink buds. An emerald nylon sheer has a sunburst pleated skirt and wears a cluster of yellow roses.

» Slim Skirts At Bruno's the suits are still of the shorter jacket petsuasion, whether the jacket is fitted or a boxy stroller type. Bruno is not lengthening his skirts quite so much as the other designers, probably because said skirts are sticking to slender lines. But he is playing up a new suit neckline, It is the tuxedo front, which means a scooped out effect revealing quite a lot of the blouse bosom

New, too, is his use of cotton for the cocktail dress. He does one in white pique in fitted prin. cess style with notched revers « «.« and he buttons it down the front with big faceted jet buttons. There's a companion dress in dinner length. One trio of evening dresses by

Bruno take to an astral plane’ called “sun,” “moon,” and “stars.” They are of sheer fabric with me‘tallic embroidery motifs matching their names. The House of Sondheim goes all out for the longer skirt and makes it look even longer by combining it with a molded body characterizes “as “taut,” which means that it's practically a° modified hobble where it ends just below the outward curve of calf” Above this hemline

diagonally tucked in flat folds separated by rows of fagotting. The same treatment also appears in a daytime dress.

down far enough to form an uneven hemline, Like ‘Trigere, Sondheim is going in for the short-sleeved coat. Prettiest of the lot is a fulllength black wool with a very full shirred back held in by a self-

Finale of the Sondheim show, and the day, was a two-piece gray wool stole suit with a gunmetal leather belt. The stole, forming a straight capelet effect across the front, buttoned behind the shoulders and fell into floating panels to the hemline.
