of Arrests

‘By MARC G. WAGGENER SR LS current season

minor crime wave with an alarming

the taking of game, Don Hughes, director of today, Approximately a hundred arrests for violation of the hunting and

. trapping laws were made by the conservation = officers during the opening week of the hunting season and scores of others have been made as the season progressed. The violations, = Mr. Hughes pointed out, have ranged all the way from failure to have a license to killing farm stock and shooting on ‘public: highways where. the lives of motorists were endangered. The

highways, using spotlights, became

-#'s0 prevalent that a special cam-

paign was waged by the - tion officers. All during the season the conservation officers have been working day and night, checking

ing the days and checking on illegal hunting and trapping reports | at night, A study of “the number of arrests made by the conservation officers during the hunting and trapping season is being made by Mr. Hughes in an attempt to secure some ‘explanation for the increase.

Indiana’ Not Alone

The wave of game law violations {during the hunting season has not, been confined to Indiana alone, according to reports reaching Mr. Hughes. New York state's conservation commission: announced re-

ing laws in that state had reached’ alarming totals.

In some states the greater number of violations of hunting. laws has been attributed to a “postwar letdown” and to the increased number of hunters in the field. It is regarded as possible that these factors have played a part in conditions in Indiana,

Season Disappointing As Hoosier nimrods prepare to put their hunting togs away for another season, many of them feel disappointed in the results of their j trips into the field. A shortage of game was reported from many parts of the state, best bird and rabbit huntihg being confined to scattered areas. Few hunters can boast of taking the. limit and it is anticipated that ia survey of the license holders will 'reveal® that the kill this year was {considerably under that of past | years. x : 2h * Pheasants Lose Tails While conservationists have been concerned about the effect of the freezing temperatures and sleet and snow upon the pheasants, quail and other birds, an interesting bit of lore was uncovered. * Several years: ago, following a sleet storm in St. Joseph county, conservationists checking on game birds, found a number of pheasants trapped when their tail feathers were frozen to the ground. Eight-

een of these birds were released and

License Sales Up An increase in the number of hunting, fishing and trapping lcenses issued during December, in comparison to those issued in December 1945, was reported today by the division of fish and game. Since the hunting and trapping seasons extend into 1947 and licenses are issued on a calendar year basis, both hunters and trappers are required to get the new licenses in advance. veterans also showed an increase during December over the same month in the preceding year. Lakes Are Freezing

Reports from the northern part

of the state this week indicate that|

it may not be long until the ice fishermen can swing into action. A rim of ice was observed on a

number of lakes over the week-end

but it will take a longer period of |

below freezing weather before the anglers can venture out to their| favorite fishing holes. Ice fishing is a popular sport with many ‘Hoosiers, especially those who

live in the immediate vicinity of the

lakes.
