What has been done ne vil

In five ads already published, many of your questions have been answered. The story of natural gas has been told. Gas rates have been compared. The question of taxes has been explained. How the Gas Utility is run, by whom

and for whose benefit—has been discussed. Now, as the popular saying has it: The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Here is the answer tothe question: ‘What has been done with the Gas Utility's profits in the past

11 years?”

B..oox STATED, these profits have been plowed back into the business. Why? Because the rapid growth of Indianapolis made it necessary. In 1935, there were about 375,000 persons living in Indianapolis. Today, the estimated population is 416,000. Back in 1935 industrial employnient was about 33,000. noua, 18 shmoss fn ies as large—94,000. * Back in 1935, the largest single day's s use of gas was 12 million cubic feet. In 1945, it was 32 million cubic feet. During the win of 1946-47 the peak day is expected to go

over 45 million cubic feet. Here is an increase "in demand, almost FOUR TIMES as large ..

as 11 years ago. Planning on and delivering a gas load of this size meant a steady and

continuous program of expansion. A program that cost many millions of dollars.

In 1936 almost $300,000 were spent for laboratory” equipment, new autos, trucks, new coke-handling machinery and office equipment. The following year new water gas machines, a new boiler plant and compressors were added to increase gas-making capacity. This, with the distribution system additions cost almost 1 million dollars. In 1938, 1939, and 1940 another million dollars went into a new exhauster, purifying equipment, compressors, autos, service trucks and further additions to the main system. In 1941, a new gas holder was built, doubling the gas storage capacity, and this, with new boilers, vehicles and main extensions ran better than $1,200,000. .

In 1942, the bills were paid for a new battery of coke ovens finished the year before; for new electrical generating machinery, plant mains; a new water system, sewer system, yard tracks and still further additions to the main system. These items came to about $1,300,000. In 1943, 1944 and 1945 about 1/2 million dollars were spent on a biitahe plant, compressors and an exhauster —all designed to increase capacity and.give you better gas pressure. Additional main work, all that war priorities allowed, was also included in this figure.

In 1946, about $3,300,000 went into improvements. A battery of old coke ovens was

replaced out of reserves set aside for this

purpose; new coke-handling and coal-unload-ing machinery was installed; a boiler plant, a producer plant and new compressors were added —all with the same idea in mind: bigger capacity and better service—keeping

pace with the gas demands of an industrial :

city, bursting at-the seams.

There is about $2,300,000 worth of construction going on rightenow, to be completed this year, in 1947. new water gas machines will add another 15 njillion cubic foot daily capacity; new purification equipment, steam lines and distribution expense wi vp the baanen of the prowess,

improvements, made in the course of 11 years, are added to this list, it totals just about 11 million dollars. Eleven million dollars spent on growing with

erations, without one cent of new financing.

In addition to this 11 million dollars spent on improvements and expansion to

“keep pace with a growing city, the Gas Util-

ity paid off approximately $3,200,000 worth of revenue bonds, reducing its original indebtediless of 14 million dollars to $10,766,000.

; Again, the answer to what has been ddne with the profits of the Gas Utility in the past = 11 years, is a simple one: The money has been spent to extend the main system and

bring gas to thousands of new families in. = Hl

Marion County; to increase gas capacity; to ~ improve pressure and service; to pay off in~ debtedness—in short, to keep growing larger “as Indianapolis grew and expanded.

Even a casual glance at a few statistics shows the Gas Utility’s growth since 1935;

1935 146 | Increase Miles of mainsinuse| 876 1,215 387% Meters in service 77.25 * 113,500 Domestic gas use 234 billion 5 billion cubic feet cubic feet 666%2 million | 134 billion cubic feet cubic feet 288 million | 570 million cubic feet cubic feet 3 billion 7 billion cubic feet cubi feet

An increase of 38% in miles of mains, added 47% more customers. These gas customers

used 128% more gas in their homes, 162%

more gas in industries and 98% more gas in

- commercial establishments . . . a total in-'

crease in the use of gas of 143% since 1935.

In the past 11 years Gas Utility profits have been spent in bringing gas-making capacity up to demand, in bettering service,

eliminating pressure problems — and — nl
