Remaking Of 'Ecstasy’

Is Planned

Wants to Reshoot Film in Czechoslovakia

By WILLIAM McGAFFIN Tigges Foreign Correspondent PRAGUE, Dec. 27.—Gustav Machaty, Czech-American film producer who discovered Hedy Lamarr, is flying back to Hollywood to assemble an American cast. He says he will bring it to Prague next summer to remake “Ecstasy.” Tall, energetic Mr. Machaty made both the glamorous Hedy and himself famous with his original “Ecstasy.” He is moving Hollywood to his native land to defeat the efforts of the major Hollywood studios, who he says were freezing him out because he ‘is an independent producer. Space Sewed Up These studios had all the space sewed up in Hollywood and refused to let Mr. Machaty have any, says Mr. Machaty. So, he simply came to Prague and made a deal with Barrnadov, the biggest flim studio fn Czechoslovakia. They were delighted to lease him all the space he needs. Mr, Machaty s says that an additional advantage of shooting the picture here is that he plans to place the story in 1900 baroque Prague. He wants to film it against the picturesque background of the old ¢ity along the Vlitava river, whose lovely spires and stone bridges are sometimes called a falry tale in stone. Scissors of Censors Vicki Baum will write the story for the new version of “Ecstasy,” Mr. Machaty said. The original was filmed in Ruthenia, in the southeast corner of Czechoslovakia, | now annexed to Soviet Russia. It was the object of many movie eénsors’ scissors, because of its heavy sex appeal, including one sequence showing Hedy scampering across an open field without any clothes on. But, Mr. Machaty’s idea about those scenes is” that “they were beautiful.” He says that they were objectionable “only in the soiled minds of the censors.” . Married to Mandl Hedy Kiesler, as the Viennese actress was called, was married at one time to Fritz Mandl,” Austrian munitions magnate who “scrammed” to Juan Domingo Peron’s Argentina when the Nazis began to lose out in Europe. Among the legends that have grown up about “Ecstasy” is that Mr. Mandl spent a fortune trying to buy up all copies of the pictures that displayed his wife in—to him— embarrassing nudity. Mr. Machaty says that this legend is largely apocryphal. Mr. Machaty doesn’t know yet who will take Hedy's role, although be is considering a “pretty redheaded starlet named Sue Casey.

HAGERSTOWN, Md., Dec. 27 (U. P.)—Four determined burglars jimmied their way into a local concrete plant and hauled away its 1200pound safe. But probably they wish they had been a little more methodical. Police found the strong box in an open fleld eight mjles from town yesterday. They concluded that the thieves were “just plain dumb.” The safe had been hacked open with a sledge hammer. Fifty dollars In cash was missing. But the thieves passed up a number of envelopes containing $37,500 in bonds and securities.

Service Pins

10 Employees Here Honored at Party

Service emblems were presented by John A. Schumacher, city council president, to 10 local employees of Loew's theater at a party held in the theater last night. Announcing the presentation, Boyd Sparrow, manager, said similar emblems are being awarded employees in the New York home office and in all cities containing Loew's theaters, Nationally there are 75 employees who will wear the 30-year emblem, nearly 300 in the 20-year group and over 1200, who have finished 10 years, Mr. Sparrow said. Their combined service record total more than 20,000 years, justifying the belief that Loew's has more Icng-time members than any other company in show business, he added. Local employees awarded emblems were Mr. Sparrow, Mark Grifiin, Zeva Yovanovich, Wilburn Smith, Joseph Shea, Ralph Schofield, George Currens, William Godfrey, Stena Decher and Benjamin IMorris.
