2 Meets Billed For City Over This Week-End
Washington, Cathedral To Play Hosts
By UNITED PRESS It was the day after Christmas but Hoosier high school basketball fans still have unopened packages in the way of holiday tournaments this week-end. The invitational tourneys highlighted the last week-end of basketball én 1046. Only a handful of single games were on the calendar as most squads take a year-end rest before hitting the final stretch. Touted as the topnotch tournament was the six-team affair at Hammond tomorrow and Saturday. South Bend Central and Hammond high, two of the state's best, were included in the field. Unbeaten Hammond and Central, with only one loss on its record, may meet in semi-final round play. South Bend drew a bye while Ham~ mond was matched with city rival Tech, which fell before the Wildcats 49-35 a few weeks ago. Two Meets Here Elsewhere in the state, tournaments held the limelight. Tomorrow, holiday competition was scheduled at Gary, Indianapolis, | Nappanee and East Chicago. if he ever got a chance to call on his extra-point artist—George (Goat) Jernigan—against the Tar Heels, there were wails from Chapel Hill, just as loud and just as tearful. Coach Carl Snavely had a good cry when his rangy, capable center, Chan Highsmith, broke two vertabrae against Virginia. Matters got even worse last week when Art Weiner, 200-pound end and ace pass snatcher among the Tar Heel flankers, decided to quit school and go home to Newark, N. J.
