For Home Use Says Industry Got More Than Fair
WASHINGTON, Dec. 26 (U. P.). ~The house Republican food study committee, renewing its criticism of the administration’s sugar program, demanded today that housewives get special consideration in any increase in the sugar ration in 1047. The committee said the supply picture should permit an increase in both individual and industrial sugar rations next year, But if the situation improves fur. ther, it said, any additional hike should go exclusively to housewives,
Housewives Last In Past
The committee sald in a repprt to G. O. P. House Leader Joseph Martin, Jr., that industrial users all during the war got more than their fair share of sugar while housewives, because they were easier to regulate, “received the short end of the sugar deal.” “When she had coupons,” it said, “her grocer had no sugar; when there was plenty of sugar, she had 1:0 coupons. When the beet sugar warehouses of the west were bulging, the store shelves of the east were bare.”
As a result the committee said it| will insist “with whatever weight| it can” that housewives benefit from any increase in the sugaf ration in 1947.
Suggests Sugar Tariff
Senator Butler (R. Neb.), after he would make sugar a “big issue” in the new congress. “I have serious doubts that we should continue the federal control program we have followed [for several years,” he sald in a formal statement. . “Removal of all controls would ultimately increase both the acreage of sugar beets and sugar cane. Possibly what we need is just a plain old-fashioned tariff to protect this important industry.” Expect 10-Pound Increase The committee challenged Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson's estimate that the individual sugar ration could be increased only five pounds per person in April. This would bring the total basic ration to 20 pounds a
year. It said the sugar supply outlook warrants an increase of at least
sibility that rationing can be dropped entirely later in the year. Mr. Anderson also said that industrial sugar users probably could | be boosted from 60 to T0 per cent of their prewar consumption.
