Student Prince’ Audience: || Shows Public Is Hungry
For Stage Entertainment
Musical More Effective Than 'Blossom Time,' But It Reminds Critic of Amateur Efforts : By HENRY BUTLER
Last night was Christmas and
no time to be vitriolic about “The
Student Prince,” which opened a four-day run at English’s. There's the inevitable comparison with “Blossom Time,” another
Messrs. Shubert property and also Romberg. “The Student Prince” is probably if only because Romberg by himself has more musical scope than Rom= berg refurbishing Franz Schubert. Some of “The #Student Prince” music has become almost like folkmusic. Every teen soprano, teen tenor, has tackled it, But “The Student Prince” on the stage is a weird, hybrid opus. Its appeal to a large audience like last night's crowd reflects national hunger for stage, rather than screen, entertainment, ‘Preposterous Clowning’ It has elements of the circus (the preposterous clowning, for example, same deal as in “Blossom Time”) It’s reminiscent of high-school plays, high-school operettas. But it's better done than most high-school stage efforts, so that people who know the theater mainly through amateur performances are agreeably surprised. The title has enormous is prestige.

more effective than “Blossom Time,”
Plus the done-to-death music, it attracts people who would be repelled by newer, more interesting things. An audience doesn’t seem to mind the fact that the plot, such as it is, can scarcely be followed.
wSome ‘Honorable Mentions’ Messrs. Shubert neglect to mention in the regular program the name of Wilhelm Forster, who wrote the original “Alt Heidelberg.” (Forster is incidentally mentioned in the souvenir programs.) Actually, the Forster play has much more dignity and plausibility. Embellished with student songs (they did sing “Gaudeamus Igitur” last night) like “O, Alte Burschenherrlichkeit” or “Wass kommt dort von der Hoeh'?”, “Alt Heidelberg” is a good specimen of neo-romantic German sentimental drama. Honorable mentions in a review may seem arbitrary. I want to single out John Mooney (looking like Raymond Massey) for his performance as Dr. Engel, Prince Karl Franz’'s tutor. Mr. Mooney contrived to keep a wisely, amusedly tolerant attitude toward some of the silly business that went on around him.
Critical of Climaxes I don't want to mention matters like excessive cuteness, ham-acting, chemical blondes or any of the things that seem to me absurd in a stage attraction that still, mirabile dictu, draws crowds. . In spite of some indignant letters concerning my comments on the Messrs, Shubert’s “Blossom Time,” I still believe that show people are more or less forced into doing less than their best efforts in such oldhat road shows. Final comment: Despite good individual voices, here and there, ensemble effects, choral and orchestral, in both Shubert shows tend to wind up in uproarious, musically bad climaxes.
IN NEW COMEDY—Elaine Ellis, appearing in "Springtime for Henry," comedy starring Edward Everett Horton, stage and screen actor, opens a sixday run at English's at 8:30 p. m. next Monday, The play will be seen in a Special midnight show starting at 11:30 p. m. New Year's eve, besides the regular 8:30 p. m, that day.
