Program Given By Symphony Norwegian Soloist |
Not in Best Voice *
By HENRY BUTLER Saturday night's Indianapolis Symphony orchestra program had all the breeziness of a pop concert. Fabien Sevitzky and his musicians were on ‘a with-Christmas-trees-bedecked stage “(as the Germans would say). oft They played on a stage recently vacated by the Shrine circus for children — a circus including lions that reportedly roared during Torsten Ralf's high notes at rehearsal Friday. To “pop” Baturday's concert still more, both Dr. Sevitzky and Mr. Ralf were in genial mood. They both made little speeches. Nobody raised the question which of the two, in Dr. Sevitzky's favorite gag, had the more genuine Hoosier accent. But I guess Dr. Sevitzky won, since he had to prompt Mr. Ralf with the English equivalent of a Norwegian word in one of Sjoegren’s songs. The word was “sweetheart.” Play Haydn's “Christmas” All this pleasing business went on during a program that started with two chorale-preludes by Frances McCollin based on famous Bach themes, the first known through the St. Matthew Passion, the second familiar as the Palm Sunday hymn, “All Glory, Laud and Honor.” Miss McCollin's neo-classic writing inevitably sounds like modern orchestral transcriptions of Bach's own chorale-preludes, with the difference that she adds subtly and sensitively-written beginnings and endings. It's restrained, intelligent | writing. The Haydn "Christmas" symphony,

A lot of it sounds old now— old and quaint, despite lovely, confident melodic lines. Mr. Ralf, who was not, I judge, in his best voice Saturday night (a whiff of local smog, no doubt), sang skillfully above slight huskiness to project the sunlit-golden quality of the “Meistersinger” Prize song. He continued with the dedth scene from Verdi's “Othello,” a splendid interpretation, and, after intermission and Morton Gould's “Minstrel Show,” with two songs by Bjoegren and “Tristan’s Death” by Rangstrom
The variety of Mr. Ralf's selections demonstrated the range of his abilities, from the heroic to the lyric. And all of his singing, powerful, effective, was done with the combined assurance and modesty of the great artist. Fine Performance A world premier of Mr. Gould's “Minstrel Show” was the occasion for two consecutive performances— one, as Dr. Sevitzky amiably stated, as a rehearsal. I haven't heard Mr. Gould's works often enough to render any verdict. But I've always had the impression’ that his phenomenal skill in orchestration sort of runs away with his thematic material. Of chief momentary interest was the fact that the orchestra did a fine performance of that technically difficult composition.
Dr. Sevitzky concluded "with
