within the next three years supporting farm prices at high levels and thus keeping up food costs to the city consumers? The answer is yes, if the present providing for government sup-| - of most farm commodities at 90 per cent of parity remains un-

changed. Whether to chance it is one of the major problems facing the incoming Republican congress. The problem is not pressing at the moment because of the high prices. But it is likely to be paramount in 1947 as a result of declining farm prices. Already, the government has lost $80 million this years supporting potato prices at about 2 cents a pound, and 20 million bushel of potatoes are rotting in the ground. The government foresees the nepessity of making loans to farmers of $1.15 a bushel on a good share of this year’s bumper carn ¢rop. Without the pegged price; corn undoubtedly would drop lower with a resulting decline in cost of corm products. Potato Planting ‘Restricted’ And the government may have to go into ‘the egg-buying business soon, paying Midwest poultrymen about 35 cents a dozen for their eggs. Purchases of dried eggs for Britain is the chief factor supporting the egg market now. The crux of the price-support problem is that the 90-per-cent-of-parity law provides such high support prices that it encourages production of many farm commodities and so the government may find itself with huge unsalable surpluses. Agriculture Secretary Anderson is worried about the prospect. He
