Jail Inmates Better Housed, Jury Charges
Times State Service LEBANON, Ind. Dec. 20.—A re< port of the Boone county grand Jury disclosed today that. county
. [criminals are better housed than | [the poor in the infirmary.
The county jail was described as being In “very good condition” while the infirmary was noted as “a disgrace to the citizens of Boone county” and “unfit for human habitation.” : The only adverse comment on the county jail detailed the need of painting some cells, Conditions at the infirmary, housing 29 inmates, has been a matter of controyersy for several years. Successive grand juries have recommended improvements, but this was the most strongly-worded report
to consider an extra 1047 appropriation of $5000 for repairs at the institution. The. superintendent and matron, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Copeland, were: exonerated of a responsibility for poor conditions. The report said: “We find, however, the Boone county poor are kept in a very clean condition by the superintendent thereof, considering the facilities with which they have to work. “The farm does not have sufficient and proper dishes, cooking utensils, cleaning tools and equipment for the health of patients therein. We find plumbing in the building bad, no baths for the inmates on the second floor and the lavatory (overflow) from the upstairs runs down on the refrigerators in the kitchen where the food is kept. “We find that there are insuffi-
so far. cient tools for the operation of the EX ACTLY model T automobile, apparently Material shorta and t i » : eed “souped-up” with ial equips ges d the ne-|farming land ...” the report said. ment,
