‘Academic Freedom’ Guaranteed Faculty

Three Indiana university professors who signed a petition asking inclusion of the Communist party on the Nov. 5 ballot today were cleared of charges that they were subversive, They signed the petition as individuals and not I. U. faculty members, the I. U, board of trustees pointed out In a report released by Governor Gates with “no comment; the report speaks for itself.” The governor had ordered the probe after a demand by the Indiana department of the American Legion. The trustees pointed out that instructors at the state institution are guaranteed “academic freedom of thought and speech” and that there is no “restraint” upon the faculty in or outside of class. Formal Petition Not Signed

“This is essential to the success of any educational institution so lopg as the statements are not definitely anti-social,” the report said, The report also revealed that the petition signed by the instructors was not the “formal” petition filed at a later date with the state board of election commissioners by the Communist party of Indiana. The latter petition “was not signed by these three professors.” said the report. The three who signed the controversial petition that touched off
