Employment Drop Shown After Canning Season Ends

Employment among production workers in the state continued to decline, reports for the period from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15 indicated today. A monthly survey made by the Indiana employment security division, co-operating with the U. 8. bureau of labor statistics, show general industrial activity was not affected adversely by the recent sonal strike. The decline shown was the result of laying off of 11,000 workers in the canning industry. Drop Forecast

However, when Dec. 15 figures are released, it is expected that smployment will have dropped below the Nov. 15 level, even though the miners have returned to work, the division said. Employment during the mid-Oc-fober, ‘mid-November period ‘was $38,586, it is estimated. This is a decrease of 1.3 per cent from the previous ‘monthly period and 2.7 per cent below the same period, 1045

Corresponding = weekly payrolls

were $15270,650, an increase of

nine-tenths of one per cent from the period ending Oct. 15 and 52 per cent abdve previous year levels, the estimate shows. Some Gains Made | Including the canning industry, manufacturing industries made a contra-seasonal gain of approxi- | mately 6000 workers. However, this increase was more than offset by the canning layoffs, { Employment gains were made by | 13 of the 15 major groups of manufacturing industries studied. Ten of these groups increased payrolls | from Oct, 15 to Nov. 15. The electrical machinery group, increasing 11.4 per cent in employ- | ment and 20.1 per cent in payrolls, | and the rubber products group, with increases of 2.7 per cent in| employment and 50.1 per cent in payrolls, were especially impressive. | Increases were due mainly to easing | of raw materials necessary to the production of electrical machinery | and rubber products. |
