and photo-electrio cells. Yet he sounds and acts like a man who would make a good quarterback on the army football team. He still looks like he's pushing his 22d birthday. The machine measures growth or decrease of germs in any given liquid agent, by means of a photoelectric cell.
Thus the vicious microbe staphylocus is placed in six different liquids, or combinations of lMquids,

s Scienti
st's Work The curve shows an upward trend when ataphylocus is placed in a penicillin solution, but it soon straightens out as the penicillin begins to act. Dr. Faguet has found that pencillin and sulfanilamide used together in fighting this disease are generally more satisfactory than using one or the other alone. The curve straightens out sooner, Indicating quicker action and the two medicines do not counter the action of each other, In time, science will be able to chart accurately the action of all antibiotics on all types of germs, And science will be able to chart just as accurately the properties of agents that cause germs to grow. If a new antibiotic is discovered, Dr. Faguet can test its efficiency on his machine within a short time. Formerly, the tests were slow and accuracy was within 10 to 20 per cent. They involved long and laborious hours of sampling the solutions every.few minutes. The machine does in 48 hours the same work that it .would take a man seven days to do, working day and night, and working without too
much acouracy.
