stop at a compact counter. Compacts are gifts that never lose favor because, no matter how many she has, a girl can always use another. . One of the distinguished lines of compacts about this year is the Wadsworth collection. The Chinese influence highlights the line. Wadsworth designers did extensive research and have adapted colorings, designs and motifs from Ming porcelains. These Chinese motifs appear throughout the line at various price levels, 4-Inch ‘Whoppers’ "New, too, are the all-metal, round oversize powder cases measuring a full four inches. These make smart accessories for women who like the striking and unusual. One of the Wadsworth designs is 8 Chinese key pattern. Colored enameled dots in Ming colors decorate others. In the $10 range there is a Chinese turquoise transparent enamel on silver. The design was taken from a Ming porcelain and has the same delicate beauty. A Chinese flower motif highlights another compact combining pink and yellow gold with brilliant flowers in transparent enamel—also inspired by a Ming vase. Conversation Pieces Although the Chinese influence is significant, it is by no means the only feature of the line. There is,|

for instance, a collection of fan- |

shaped cases at varying price levels | which feature a variety of en-| graved and engine-turned designs. | Conversation pieces include an| amusing family tree design with] space on the trunk to engrave your | name; a brocade pattern in a round case of pink gold metal; a square with unicorns, rabbits and peacocks in typical

Guard Against Holiday Over-Eating

Tempting Candies May Spoil Appetite

By JANE STAFFORD Sclence Service Staff Writer REMEMBER TO GUARD against the diet indiscretions that so often,

food shortages, brought an unhappy ending to the Christmas holidays. In the hectic round of preOhristmas shopping, snacks are frequently made to substitute for regular and nourishing meals. Popcorn from the Christmas tree, Christmas cakes, candy and other goodies, though harmless in themselves, tempt many a person into over-eating or spoil appetites for the next regular meal, Diabetics and others who, for medical and health reasons must

ber the danger they face if they indulge in forbidden foods, however tempting, n " » _ A GOOD THING for all of us to remember about diet, on Christmas or any other day, is the newest diet advice, eat first what you should and then eat to your ideal weight. The “what you should” eat includes vitamin and mineral-con-taining foods such as fruits, vege{tables including green, leafy ones, {milk and whole grain cereals or | breads. You also need meat or eggs (or both, and butter or vitaminenriched margarine, but you are not {so likely to forget these items. Remember to include citrus fruit, tomato juice or some other source of vitamin C in the daily diet,

» » # BETWEEN-MEAL nibbling, apt to reach its peak at holiday seasons, is frowned upan by most physicians. Best time to give children their holiday candy treat is right after the meal—with no more at least until after the next regular meal. For the healthy child or grown-up, for that matter, who gets hungry between meals a glass of milk, a piece of fruit or plain bread and butter is advised. The Christmas nut bow! and {punch bowl or egg nog should be {sampled with moderation. Nuts are good foods but concentrated. You get more food value than you may realize in a small portion. And health and medical authorities unite in advising moderation in consumption of that main ingredient of . punch alcohol.
