Bone-Swelling Disease Has Baby Doctors Baffled
(it may develop when baby is several months ‘old, Dr. John Safley, radiologist of this city, reported to the Radiological Society - of North | America. | Pediatricians with whom Dr. Caffey has discussed the cases he has been seeing over the past nine years wonder how such a striking condition has escaped their attention so far, The cause of the disease has so {far not been discovered. Syphilis and scurvey have been suspected but both have been ruled out. In many cases the mother reported putting the baby to bed perfectly well at night, and finding him with swelling and fever the next morning.
every case. In some the ribs were thickened, in others the shoulder blade. The lower arms might be affected but not the upper, or the reverse, The same is true of the legs. Dr. Caffey thinks the bone changes come after the swellihgs of the soft tissues but even this is not yet -definitely known.
Massive doses of penicillin and
‘sulfa drugs had no effect on the disease. So far, however, the babies {have all recovered completely.
