Venezuela Orders. ~||'State of Siege’

Spectacular ‘Revolt Is Short-lived

CARACAS, Dec. 12 (U. P).— .{ Venezuela remained under a ‘state of siege” today. This followed a spectacular, but short-lived, revolt against the yearold revolutionary regime of President Romulo Betancourt. Loyal army: and air force units smashed the ‘“counter-revolution” within 24 hours, There were no fatalities. ‘ President Betancourt announced last night that the revolt had been crushed. An official communique said the “state of siege” would remain in effect “until the situation is entirely normalized.” Rebel Leader Escapes Ma). Carlos Maldonado Pena, who led the uprising, escaped by plane {into neighboring Colombia. Several of his lieutenants accompanied him, The Venezuelan general staff announced that Maj. Maldonado had landed “safely at Puerto Carreno, Colombia. | Official sources said only a “few 'hundred” air and land forces took | part in the revolt. Several government planes were seized.
