Howe Snipers In Hard Tests

‘Blue Devils Meet Shelbyville Five

By BOB STRANAHAN Marion county and Indianapolis high school basketball shooters go, at it again this week-end in a big way with no fewer than 16 games on the Friday and Saturday docket, Probably the two outstanding engagements bring a pair of outstanding South Central conference clubs into the city against unbeaten Indianapolis standard bearers. Jerry Steiner's Shortridge Blue Devils, handy winners over Greenfield and Noblesville, get the toughest test of all when they play host to Shelbyville. The Golden Bears of Frank Barnes rank well up the list of the best teams in the state and boast one of the best pivotmen in the business in Bill Garrett, He is one of the scoring leaders in the South | Central,

Crispus Attucks, Washington, Manual, Ben Davis and Southport all are carded for double duty in the heavy firing. The Tigers play at Windfall tomorrow night and then at Pine Village on Saturday. Mark Pierson Is City’s Top Pinman With 688 Score; Pot of Gold Deadline Near

#¥ By BERNARD HARMON Most of last night's top tenpin scores were rolled in the weekly ses« sion of the Indianapolis league at the Pritchett alleys. Despite the absence of three teams, who postponed their games, four of the five city totals over 650 were presented by Indianapolis leaguers. Mark (Peck) Pierson again bombarded the maples to take city-wide honors. Rolling his second bulging series in two weeks, he had 212, 247, 2290688 for L. V. L, L. 8. Pratt. A fellow team member, Bob Kelly, also was over the 650-mark getting 191, 234, 230-655. Other Indianapolis leaguers in the upper class were John Eder, who came to life with one of his best totals in recent years for Stokely-Van Camp. He had 222, 225, 222-660. John Mencin with 218, 233, 203— 654 for Marott Shoes was the fourth Indianapolis leaguer over 650. Marion Swinford of the West Side Merchants was the only “outsider” in the top five. Rolling, \ with Gold-

stein Department Store at the West Side Center, he had 190, 266, 204— 660. Lorenz Wiesman, Antler alley operator, announced today that the entry in his annual “Pot of Gold” team tournament, scheduled at his alleys for three week-ends starting Saturday, has exceeded the 125 mark, assuring a first place prize of $300

With the deadline for entering set at tomorrow midnight, Wiesman urges teams to make thelr reservations as soon as possible, Call Wiesman at LI. 2351 or tournament secretary Ed Erler at TA. 2060.
