"Times Special ; NEW YORK, Dec. 12. — Inaugurated locally in the New York area in 1943 when the first casualtiles of world war II were being brought back to this country, the annual Christmas card distribution to hospitalized war veterans by the Greeting Card industry, through the American Red Cross, developed into a nation-wide project during the Christmas season of 1944. The distribution of free Christmas cards to the patients in military hospitals reached its peak in 1945 when nearly two and one-half million free Christmas cards were made available for personal presentation by the Gray Ladies of the Red Cross to veterans of both world war I and II in all military hospitals throughout the land. This year, fortunately, there are far fewer patients in the hospitals, but, nevertheless, it will require

After each year's distribution, fleld directors of the American Red Cross enter detailed reports showing that personal presentation of the cards to the patients has been fully carried out and they also supply information as to the reaction of the men and women in the hospitals. Scores of interesting letters have been received by the industry from both the Red Cross workers and the patients themselves. Over and over again the story is told that if it were not for these special cards, thousands of the veterans in the hospitals would have no means of greeting their loved ones at home at Christmas
